A Lychee Martini Mocktail is a distinguished choice to serve at a cocktail party. Its tangy flavor will delight your guests, and it is simple to make. Lychees are a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia, and they make for a delicious addition to any martini or other mocktail.

Why Make Martini Mocktails

Why not make martini mocktails? It’s nice to feel included in terms of socializing.

There are many reasons why I choose to drink and serve mocktails. One of them is that all my guests feel included. No one has to worry about having one drink too many, either. More people are choosing to ditch the alcohol, or at least cutback. Having nonalcoholic mocktails to serve will make everyone feel at ease.

History of a Martini

The history of martini cocktails is murky. Many historians agree it is created in the late 1800s and is named after a town called Martinez. However, this theory is frequently contested; and others propose it was created in New York City. The historical folklore is as abundant as varieties of martini.

Traditional martinis are made with extremely cold gin and dry vermouth with an olive or lemon garnish. Bartenders tried to outdo themselves by adding new ingredients for a variety of aromas and flavors.

By the late 1980s, the Lychee Martini was all the rage in New York City. Again, it’s unclear who exactly was the first to come up with the idea of adding lychee syrup, but it quickly rose in popularity. Lychees, a popular Asian fruit, add a distinct flavor to the cocktail.

What Does Lychee Taste Like?

Are you up for a friendly debate? Ask your party guests to describe the lychee flavor! Some will describe it as a sweet grape. Others might think it is more like a strawberry or watermelon, but more sour. Still others might describe it as an overly sweet pear.

However you describe it, lychee fruit is sweet, fruity, floral, and tropical all rolled into one. Lychee fruit’s flesh is soft and sweet. It is covered in a tough pink rind. They are commonly confused with Rambutan, another Indonesian fruit. (The flavors are different, though, so don’t make this mistake). This recipe is the perfect way to try this fruit.

Tips on Virgin Lychee Martini Mocktail Ingredients

The ingredients for this lychee martini mocktail are simple, but here are a few tips to help you with preparation.

Lychee Nectar

Lychees are in season from June to late summer, but they may not be available fresh in your store. Because of this, I use lychee nectar for this mocktail recipe (and, let’s be honest, it’s also way easier). You should be able to find this in most grocery stores, but if not you can get it from other online retailers.

For the garnish, I recommend using lychee fruit. If you can’t find it in the store, you should be able to find canned lychees. If you want to make use of the entire can’s contents, use the juice from the canned lychees rather than lychee nectar. Please note the canned lychees are extremely sweet.

Seedlip Nonalcoholic Spirits

Elevate your mocktails above soda water and wedges of lime with nonalcoholic spirits. Seedlip is one of my favorite brands, as well as Lyre’s and Ritual. You can find Seedlip products at your local markets or from online retailers.

They have slightly different flavor profiles, so experiment to find the one you like the most.

Lime Juice

Freshly squeezed lime juice adds the perfect zing to this nonalcoholic lychee martini mocktail. In a pinch, you can use bottled juice, but fresh will always be better. If you cannot find limes you can always swap out for Lemon Juice.

What Supplies Do I Need to Make a Lychee Martini Mocktail?

This mocktail is simple and stylish, so you won’t need a lot of supplies. However, having a few tools in your home bar will make mocktail mixology easier and more entertaining for both you and your guests.

Cocktail Shaker

A cocktail shaker is a must. Remember the Bond quote, “Shaken, not stirred.”? Cocktail shakers mix and cool your ingredients at the same time.

Martini Glasses

There is no hard and fast rule about what type of glasses you need to serve the mocktail. If you want to amp up the elegant factor you can use:

  • Martini Glass
  • Coupe Glass

Skewers for Garnish

Skewer a few lychee fruits to garnish your mocktail. Bamboo and stainless steel skewers are both good options.

Can this Mocktail be Prepared in Advance?

In theory, you can mix a batch of these virgin lychee mocktails up pretty easily. Leave out the ice until just before serving, though, so it doesn’t dilute your drink.

Although you can prepare them in advance, I would set out a small table or bar and let my guests mix this drink themselves. They are simple to put together, and this way your guests can control how sweet they want to make it.

Skewer your lychee garnishes in advance to make it easy for everyone to add that final touch.

What Time of Day is Best for Martini Mocktails?

There is no set time to drink a nonalcoholic martini. Before dinner, after dinner, in the evening to unwind. It’s always mocktail o’clock somewhere, right?

Food to Serve with Lychee Martini Mocktails

The sweet taste of lychees pair well with a variety of cheeses. You can also go all in on the lychee theme and serve this mocktail with more lychee desserts and dishes.

Although lychees are a summer fruit, using canned version or nectar means you can enjoy this martini mocktail year round. If you’re new to the flavors of lychee, let me know what you think in the comments.
